What a privilege the two people on the way to the town of Emmaus had to learn from Jesus! They did not recognize him at first and invited him to have supper with them. The Gospel of Luke reports that after Jesus had joined them at the table, “he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them” (Luke 24:30 – 32). Suddenly they recognized Jesus and exclaimed: “Were not our hearts burning with us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
Have you experienced this “burning” of the heart? I remember so well when I first experienced this as a teenager at a camp meeting. When Jesus opens the Scriptures our hearts are touched by the Holy Spirit. John Wesley (1703-1791) reported that his heart “was strangely warmed” after hearing a sermon based on Luther’s commentary on Romans.
For many years I have had the privilege of studying and teaching the Bible. It is my desire to share the Word with a broader group of people and I have decided to publish a regular discussion piece (blog) — I intend to publish every week. I envision that it will not be a monologue, but a forum for sharing insights and encouraging each other. I intend to focus on three topics:
- Trends in our culture that have an effect on believers;
- Insights from Scripture, learning from Jesus!
- Caring for fellow believers.
Please visit my contribution regularly at petergrabe.com. And please take part in the discussion!
With all best wishes!
